FromConflicttoModernSlaveryconsidersthelivesofpeopleaftertheyhavefledconflictandarrivedintheUK.ThebookdrawsoninsightsfrominterviewswiththosewhohaveexperiencedtheUKimmigrationsystem,andobservationsaremadeabouthowthecountry’sgovernmentanditsrestrictiveandhostileimmigrationpoliciescanincreasetheriskofmodernslaveryintheUK.Withabroaddefinitionofconflictasanorganisingconcept,andwhichencouragesunderstandingsthatgobeyondwar,thisworkcontextualisesthesestoriestounderstandwhysomepeopleappeartobemoreatriskthanotherswhenescapingconflictsituations.Theworkconsidersthewaysinwhichconflictcanfacilitatemodernslaveryandhowconflictlimitspeople’sagencyandthelegitimateoptionsavailabletothem.Itisthisrestrictionofagencyinthefaceofinherentlyriskyoptions,coupledwithadisruptioninsupportnetworks,thatputsthematmostriskofmodernslavery.FromConflicttoModernSlavery’sstrengthliesinitsuniqueempiricalfocusonacomparisonbetweenfirst-handaccounts.Itofferspersonalinsightsintotheexperiencesofasylumseekers,refugees,andvictimsofmodernslavery,andsituatesthesewithinextantliteraturetoidentifyspecificaspectsofpeople’sjourneysthatcanmakethemvulnerabletoexploitation.
